Are We There Yet? The Market’s Bearish Mood and the Glimmers of Rebound Potential
After a bruising stretch for stocks, investors are understandably wondering whether the worst is behind us. The S&P 500's recent dip into bear market territory—down over 20% from its February highs—has sparked fears of a deeper downturn, fueled by President Trump’s chaotic tariff policy. Poorly executed and inconsistently applied, the tariffs have rattled confidence in U.S. leadership and raised the specter of global recession.
Yet amid the panic, contrarian investors are watching closely. Volatility has surged, and investor sentiment has plunged to levels not seen since the 2008 financial crisis. The latest data from the American Association of Individual Investors shows extreme bearishness, suggesting widespread fear—a classic contrarian buy signal. However, institutional investors are still in risk-off mode, flocking to Treasury bonds and hedging with put options.
Despite the market chaos, the selloff has largely tracked deteriorating economic expectations, especially fears that prolonged tariffs will disrupt global trade and productivity. That said, several potential triggers could spark a rebound. A retreat from tariffs by Trump, a decision by trade partners to avoid retaliation, or intervention by the Federal Reserve could all change the narrative—though each scenario is riddled with uncertainty.
Even so, investors should tread carefully. History shows that bear markets often include dramatic short-term rallies that don’t mark the final bottom. With earnings season underway and more corporate warnings likely, there's still risk of further declines. But for those with strong stomachs and long-term vision, selectively re-entering the market now could offer opportunity—provided they’re prepared for more volatility ahead.
Em súmula... Pode vir a caminho ainda descidas mais acentuadas, por isso investir com prudência, sobretudo para aqueles que investem a longo termo.
